Acid Reflux Surgery
67Acid Reflux Surgery
Thinking to undergo acid reflux surgery? Here's what you need to know about acid reflux surgery. Acid reflux is a condition that causes heartburn or burning sensation in the chest especially after meal. The medical term for this condition is known as gastoesophageal reflux disease or GERD in short.
As GERD is a condition that affects the digestive system, the side effects after an unsuccessful surgery can be agonizing such as difficulty in swallowing and constant feeling of stomach bloat. Even with the success rate of the surgery is beyond 90 percent, studies have yet to confirm that the cure is permanent.
The problem may even return later on in life or worse resulting in long term complications. Hence it is adviced that acid reflux surgery be avoided if the symptoms and condition are still medically manageable. Only if the condition does not respond medically such as through drug treatments, surgery is the ultimate option.
Acid reflux surgery like laparoscopic surgery is a great alternative to the traditionally more invasive surgery. Laparoscopic surgery involves the use of a laparoscope as a guide to performing the operation. The device is attached with three miniature instruments; a small video camera, a telescope-like device as well as a mini sized flash light. The surgeon monitors the condition through the video recorded by the device to help with the surgery procedure.
Acid Reflux Surgery
The objective of this surgery is to wraps the area where the esophagus joins with the stomach to create a tighter ring of sphincter muscles that works like a valve that prevents the acids from refluxing back into the esophagus. Laparoscopic surgery is considered minimally invasive surgery that does not cost as much as other surgery.
Although the surgery is minimally invasive and your heartburn condition is not severe, it is best that the surgery be avoided due to the risks of unsuccessful procedure that makes the matter even worse as well as due to the unknown risks of long term implications even when the surgery is succesful today.
